MANDLEVE
(meaning "ear", and referring to the large notch in his left ear) occupied a
fairly small range south of the Sabi River near Skukuza, in the Kruger
National Park in South Africa. He kept close to the Sabi River where visitors
could see him at close range - perhaps the most exciting big game sighting that
Africa could offer. He must have died in late 1992 and his skeleton, including the
beautiful tusks, was discovered late in 1993.
His tusks, at 162 lb. and 152 lb. (73,5 kg. and 69,0 kg) are the heaviest pair of
tusks in the National Parks Board collection. |
